About Grade Five Theory

"Grade 5 Theory" is an examination in music theory. There are two exam boards offering a similar set of grades (1-8) for both music theory and practical music, namely the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and Trinity College.

Although theory exams are available at all other grades from 1 through 8, most people will only take a theory exam at Grade 5, because this exam is compulsory in order to take the practical exams at Grade 6 and above. As this is the first time many musicians will encounter music theory as an examined subject, or the first time they will have learned the theory of music in a structured way, it can pose a significant challenge.

Passing the Grade 5 Theory exam is one of the most important steps for a musician. Examination boards require that you pass Grade 5 Theory before you can be entered for the higher grade practical examinations at Grades 6, 7 and 8.

Whatever instrument you are learning, and this includes singers, you will need to know music theory to be able to play and understand music well.

The Exam

The exam is 2 hours long and exam conditions will be enforced. Exam conditions mean no talking, communicating with others or moving from your seat until the the exam is finished. If you have a question or problem during the exam you must raise your hand to talk to a supervisor.

You will need to take two pencils, two rubbers and a ruler into the exam with you.

Theory exams are marked out of a total of 100, with 66 marks required for a Pass, 80 for a Merit and 90 for a Distinction.
